A general plan for the conservation of wall paintings was developed in September 2023 by Lisa Shekede and Stephen Rickerby the international leaders of the Gelati Monastery Complex wall painting conservation team.

The plan covers the following aspects:

1. Salt research/monitoring
2. Water (in liquid form) research
3. Environmental conditions research and monitoring
4. Original technology research
5. State research and monitoring
6. Planning physical interventions
7. Implementation.

Since 2023, the work is in progress on the fourth and fifth points of the above-mentioned plan. As part of the October mission, the preparatory works are focused on the description of the technology and state of wall painting at the upper registers (III, IV) of the North, South and West arms of the main space of the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and the preparation of relevant documentation.

The specific objectives based on visual observation of target areas (using non-invasive research methods) of the project included:

✓Determination of schemes of different periods of wall painting and their stratigraphic layers;

✓ create a visual dictionary of wall painting technology and state and photo documentation (description and documentation);

✓ Graphic documentation to illustrate technological features of wall painting;

✓Graphic documentation of wall painting damages;

✓Determination and categorization of critical locations according to the degree of damage and inclusion in graphic documentation (in all spaces of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and St. George's Cathedral);

✓ Monitoring photography and monitoring report of important locations in all spaces of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and St. George's Cathedral;

✓ Summary of available data on wall painting technology and current status.
