In recent years, due to the analysis of the crisis that emerged concerning the physical state of the Gelati monastery complex, it became imperative to undertake immediate actions. This necessitated a modification in the action plan concerning the monument, entirely based on the provisions of the World Heritage Committee decision #44COM7B.47, and the recommendations from the report of the joint World Heritage Center/ICOMOS/ICCROM Advisory mission to Gelati Monastery, conducted from November 28 to December 2, 2022.
Within the scope of the aforementioned action plan, on April 6, 2023, a contract was signed between the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation of Georgia and the Apostolic Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Georgia. According to this agreement, considering the detrimental outcomes of the works previously conducted on the monument, the management of the Gelati rehabilitation process was transferred to the Patriarchate of Georgia. The paramount objective in the rehabilitation of the Gelati monastery complex was the scrupulous implementation of the recommendations of the World Heritage Committee and its Advisory Bodies.
In accordance with the decision #44 COM7B.47 of the 44th session of the World Heritage Committee and as a result of one of the main recommendations given by the joint mission of November 28 - December 2, 2022 of the World Heritage Center and its advisory bodies - ICOMOS and ICCROM - The Temporary Committee for the Rehabilitation of Gelati was established with the blessing of His Holiness and Blessed, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Ilia II.
Within the framework of the Temporary Committee, the Patriarchate of Georgia established two deliberative bodies - the National Scientific Council and the International Advisory Council. According to the provision of the Temporary Committee for the Rehabilitation of Gelati, all conservation projects in the Gelati Monastery Complex are subject to appropriate deliberation, both in the National Scientific Council and in the International Advisory Council. The consequent final documentation is evaluated by the world heritage center and its advisory bodies.
