Non-invasive investigation and documentation of Wall Painting at the upper registers of the North, South, West arms of the main space. The Church of the Nativity of Virgin, Gelati Monaster Complex. July, 2023

The second stage of the preparatory/basic works for the conservation of the wall paintings of the Gelati monastery complex included: Description of the wall painting technology of the upper register (arch level) of the North, South and West wings of the main space of the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and preparation of relevant documentation. The specific objectives of the project were based on visual observation of the target areas (using non-invasive research methods): The specific tasks of the project based on visual observation of the target areas (using non-invasive methods) included:

 ✓Determining the patterns of wall painting from different periods and their stratigraphic layers;

✓Creating a visual dictionary of wall painting technology and photo documentation (description-documentation);

✓Development of graphic documentation to illustrate technological features of wall painting;

✓Acquaintance/analysis of the documentation of painting technology study conducted in 2021-2022 and comparison with the situation on the ground;

✓ Summary of available data on wall painting technology;

✓ Raising issues to be studied in terms of wall painting technology;

✓ Starting work on the graphic documentation of the previous conservation interventions of the wall paintings, in particular the identification of the interventions carried out on the wall paintings in the 20th century and the 2020s and determining their locations.
