Under the leadership of the Gelati Rehabilitation Committee created by the Patriarchate of Georgia, active work is underway in the Gelati monastery complex. The mission of the International Advisory Council has arrived in Georgia within the framework of the Gelati rehabilitation program. The members of the council will get acquainted with the situation and ongoing conservation and restoration works on the site.
Within the mission, Italian, German, British, and American high-ranking practicing specialists are invited who represent the leading institutions and have experience successfully implementing projects on many important monuments worldwide.
A group of conservators-restorers is currently working in Gelati, carrying out a technological study of wall painting, preparing a visual dictionary of painting technology, and making a detailed description of the problems on the monument.
Documentation of the current situation has already been submitted to international experts who are studying the wall painting conditions of the main temple. Based on the collected material, the necessary conservation measures for the wall painting will be determined. The vision and developed approaches related to conservation-rehabilitation works will be discussed at the joint working meeting of the Gelati Rehabilitation Committee and its advisory bodies, the National Scientific Council and the International Advisory Council. Georgian and foreign specialists will hold a scientific discussion and later a joint press conference immediately after the completion of the above-mentioned condition studies. The Gelati monastery complex conservation process is carried out by a group of multidisciplinary experts.
