Instrumental investigations of the structural condition of the Church of St. Nicholas and the bell tower of the Gelati Monastery

On 24–27 February 2027, instrumental investigations of the structural condition of the Church of St. Nicholas and the bell tower of the Gelati Monastery were carried out.

In accordance with the previously developed project proposal, the works were conducted during a working mission with the support of the conservators' team of the Temporary Committee for the Rehabilitation of Gelati. The investigations were implemented by experienced specialists from the Italian “Studio Berlucchi”: structural engineer Nicola Bettini, engineer Andrea Savoldi, and architect Michela Feraboli.

Within the framework of the comprehensive conservation programme of the Gelati Monastery World Heritage property, the rehabilitation of the Church of St. Nicholas and its bell tower represents one of the important tasks. Like other components of the programme, its implementation is defined in successive phases, under the methodological and practical guidance of the invited international expert, Eng. Nicola Berlucchi and his studio.

At the initial stage of the rehabilitation programme for the Church of St. Nicholas and its bell tower, in order to determine the condition of the structures and building materials, architect-restorer Nicola Berlucchi designed a structural investigation program that, alongside non-invasive (acoustic) diagnostics, also includes endoscopic examination in selected sections.
