Another working visit to Gelati of the Italian group of mosaics conservators

From November 17 to 20, 2024, as part of the mosaic conservation program for the composition in the Eastern Apse of the Church of the Nativity at Gelati Monastery, a team of qualified specialists from the Centro di Conservazione Archeologica conducted a planned working mission to the site.
During this phase of the project, the following activities were completed: thermovision scanning of the mosaic surface; georadar scanning of the mosaic surface; numerical classification of the mosaic's colors; a general review of the graphic documentation from previous work campaigns; and the return of tessera samples to their original location. These samples had been temporarily sent to the Stazione Sperimentale del Vetro, Venice, Italy, for laboratory analysis in May 2024. It is important to note that the comprehensive research efforts for the conservation project of the mosaic in the Church of the Nativity at Gelati Monastery began in March 2024 under the leadership of Prof. Roberto Nardi and his highly qualified team. According to the project timeline, the final comprehensive report of the research findings will be presented in the spring of 2025.
