From November 13 to 17, 2024, at the invitation of the Gelati Rehabilitation Interim Committee, Maria Rosa Lanfranchi and Sara Penoni, leading experts in wall painting conservation from the Opificio Delle Pietre Dure under the Italian Ministry of Culture, visited Gelati.
The aim of the working visit was to assess the condition of the wall paintings in the Church of St. George at the Gelati Monastery and to discuss the opportunities for future collaboration with the Gelati Rehabilitation Interim Committee within the framework of the wall painting conservation program.
Worth mentioning is that Opificio Delle Pietre Dure is one of the oldest and most esteemed research and conservation-restoration schools, based in Florence, with its expertise widely recognized around the world. The involvement of experts from Opificio Delle Pietre Dure will significantly contribute to the ongoing efforts to preserve and safeguard the wall paintings in the Church of St. George at the Gelati Monastery.
