Based on the non-invasive investigations into technology and condition of Gelati wall painting (The Church of Virgin Mary, Main Space) undertaken between April 2023 – February 2024, the next phase of conservation project – research and remedial interventions - has started in March 2024.

Under the supervision of Stephen Rickerby and Lisa Shekede the following activities has been undertaken:

• Development of wall painting sampling strategy;
• Next stage of non-invasive investigations, including analytical research (Multispectral imaging, IR imaging, portable X-Ray Fluorescence);
• Invasive sampling for laboratory based chemical analysis and analytical research;
• Revision of critical areas of the wall paintings;
• Development process of emergency and remedial intervention methodologies based on on-site laboratory analysis and trials;
• Emergency and remedial intervention treatments on the critical areas of the Church of the Virgin Mary.
