Concurrently, activities related to a unique mosaic also began on March 10 in the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, the major church of the Gelati monastery complex. The mosaic conservation team is composed of five experts, headed by Roberto Nardi, Director of the Archaeological Research Center of Rome, President of the International Committee for Mosaic Conservation. The team is currently carrying out the first phase works according to the conservation plan developed by R. Nardi last November. The works include non-invasive research including 3D scanning, 3D photogrammetry, etc. The current phase does not include any physical intervention on the mosaic. After the completion of interior at the major temple, the Italian group of mosaic conservators will carry out 3D research in the St. George"s Church.
The results of the conservation measures will identify the mosaics conservation needs with 1 mm accuracy.
