The mosaic painting executed in the conch of the sanctuary of the Gelati Monastery main church represents one of the most outstanding examples of the world heritage.
The mosaic requires immediate conservation work as it is significantly damaged. To this end, a group of highly qualified experts is developing long-term conservation plans. In July 2023, in order to inspect the mosaic, the members of the Gelati Rehabilitation Advisory Council together with the President of the International Mosaic Conservation Committee, Prof. Roberto Nardi, visited the monument. During the working visit on site, the experts studied the problems related to the Gelati mosaic and presented their observations to the public at a press conference on July 15th, also held in Gelati.
In close cooperation with the Gelati Rehabilitation Committee, Prof. Roberto Nardi has prepared a general vision for the conservation of Gelati Mosaics. The first practical steps will be conducted accordingly.
By the end of November, 2023, in frames of cooperation between the Gelati Rehabilitation Committee and Dr. Roberto Nardi, full plan of the mosaic 1st phase conservation has been submited.
By the end of July, 2024, an interim report for the first phase of the conservation works has been provided.
